Energy Efficient Remodeling

We at BNH Construction are committed to providing our clients with a full array of high-quality, energy efficient products that can be incorporated into nearly any remodeling/construction project. Below, we introduce you to some of our most commonly used products that save homeowners on their power bills.

Insulation Products

The tiny cracks and crevices in a home and the heat-conducting ability of ordinary construction materials means that every home must be well insulated to minimize the transfer of heat between the indoors and outdoors. Insulation is needed in all walls with an exterior outer surface, on attic ceilings and floors, under floors that sit above crawl spaces, and around all windows and doors. By effectively keeping the heat in during the winter and air-conditioned air inside during the summer, the right insulation product can boost the energy efficiency of your home by 50% to 70%.

At BNH Construction, we can explain to you the benefits of each particular type of insulation to help you make an informed decision on which to install in your home.

Some of the most common insulation materials we deal in include:

  • Fiberglass: The tiny fibers of this often pink-and-fluffy insulating material function as a heat trap. It is a good, general-use material and is very common in attics, basements, and walls. Fiberglass is frequently found in both batts and roll and loose-fill forms.
Cellulose: Up to 80% recycled, this is a very “Earth friendly” insulator. It works well almost anywhere and is especially effective at creating sound barriers.
Rigid foam board: This insulation comes in solid panels, often of polyurethane, that must be cut and fastened to studs. It is mostly used on exterior walls and is a prime choice for garages and sheds.
  • Radiant heat barriers: This insulation consists of thin sheets of “heat reflective” material that is installed in attics to prevent excess heat from entering through the roof. It can lower indoor temperatures by as much as 10ºF.

Windows and Doors

As much as 70% of most homes’ energy loss escapes through energy inefficient windows and doors. Part of the problem can be lack of insulation and air leaks, but even when these issues are solved, heat transfer through the glass and framing/door material can be very high. Newer, more energy efficient doors/windows can save you up to 20% on your energy bill.

At BNH Construction, we can present to you a large assortment of entry, French, and patio doors with high Energy Star ratings. Both windows and glass-bearing doors with double panes, sometimes filled with argon or another insulating gas, are also an excellent choice. Finally, we can offer you Low-E windows that reflect more heat than they radiate and virtually eliminate UV rays from the light that passes through them into your home.

Solar Panels

The sun is an unlimited supply of natural energy just waiting to be harvested, and modern solar panels are more efficient and cost-effective than ever before. It is now possible for solar panels to save you enough money on every power bill to pay for themselves in only a few years’ time.

BNH Construction is fully familiar with today’s solar tech industry and has the tools and know-how to help you select and choose an optimal location for your new solar panels. Typically, they are installed on rooftops, though metal posts can be used as well.

We will take into account the architectural lay-out of your home, the areas of your roof that get the most sun, and the realities of your home’s power grid. We have installed numerous solar panels in the L.A. area on past projects, and we know how to get the job done right. We also know how to work with local governments as to permits and inspections on solar panels and how to get you the benefit of any incentive programs in your area.

Other Ways to Save on Energy

Besides the three important products listed above, there are many other ways we at BNH Construction help our customers save on energy and benefit the environment, including:

  • Install LED energy efficient lighting fixtures both indoors and out and use sensors/timers to better regulate on-time.
  • Put up window awnings, carports, and patio covers that reduce the amount of heat entering your home.
  • Install ventilation fans in your attic, basement/crawl space, kitchen, and bathroom.
  • Help you select more energy efficient HVAC systems and appliances.
  • Install energy efficient wood stoves and gas/electric fireplaces.
  • Re-roof your home with a more energy efficient material, such as metal panels that reflect heat instead of absorb it.
  • Side your home with “cement siding,” foam-backed aluminum, or another high insulation siding material.
  • Locate and eliminate air leaks in your home that are causing a draft.
When remodeling or putting in a new addition, insulate and equip the room with all relevant energy efficient products.
